Carrying on & Tradition
Carrying On and Tradition in the Iowa State Fashion Show 2019.
Awarded 2nd Place in Functional Design.
In this design, a hammock was developed into a rain coat with a hood, sleeves, and pouch pockets. I worked backwards under the constraint of a hammock, and upcycled moving straps by hand manipulation for the flat looping feature on the garment front.
Undisturbed from its nature, it is able to transform back into a hammock. Attention was given to zero waste, upcycling, and garment adjustability principles during the design process. Universally styled, the coat fits virtually any size or identity. The oversized silhouette allows for comfort, movement, and the ability to keep one’s body and backpack dry in wet weather. It additionally reverberates with an avant-garde streetwear aesthetic.
Inspiration was driven from the my father's refugee experience, and the functional designs for refugees created by ADIFF founder Angela Luna. Refugees are carrying on through their journeys with their few precious belongings, but ultimately their own culture, identity, and aspirations. Although first inspired by functional clothing intended for refugees, the designer found great connection with her home university.
“Hammocking” is a predominant pastime for the student population at Iowa State University. When the weather brings those most comfortable, joyous temperatures and sunshine, the wooded campus is laden with students sprawled in hammocks. One can observe the hammock-ers relaxing with friends, taking naps, or simply studying. Hammocking serves as a way for students to once again connect with nature and their peers. The activity allows for some inner reflection and renewal after much exertion for their studies and their chosen adventures.
When the rain hits, the student is prepared with this innovative design solution defying traditional expectations. Though they may leave the comfort of their hammock, renewal has been experienced, and protection is theirs. They are ready to push boundaries and continue with their adventure.
