Refugee Resilience

Refugee Resilience in the Iowa State Fashion Show 2019.

Awarded 2nd Place in Sustainability and 3rd place in Art-to-Wear.

Struck by the work ethic and resilience of refugees, this overall jumpsuit was created as a social commentary, art-to-wear piece that incorporated upcycling and garment adjustability techniques. All fabric comes from my father's jeans. He is a refugee of the Vietnam War. The sleeves are adjustable in length, zipping off at the elbow, and additionally zipping off at the shoulder. The foundation of an overall was chosen for its symbolic connection with blue-collar work, a place where refugees often find themselves when they first arrive. The garment resonates with uniqueness because of the previous owner’s particular way of wearing an article of clothing, and the fabrication of one-of-a-kind materials based on Dr. Mary Ruppert-Stroescu’s patent for textile repurposing and sustainable garment design. 139 pieces in total were put together using this method. The piecing together of the denim scraps represents the scarring, often tragic situations refugees have gone through and their resilience in overcoming.
